Best time to visit Vietnam

Discover the best time to visit Vietnam and its famous tourist sites. Depending on the region you want to visit, choose your time accordingly, to appreciate the fullest what the country has to offer.

Vietnam benefits from a hot and humid climate, including monsoon periods in between. There are two seasons: the dry season from November to April, and the humid season between May and October. The ideal time to travel to Vietnam is during the dry season between November and April. However, even if the monsoon starts in June until September, it is still possible to visit and appreciate the country, from north to south. Just note that the weather is hot and rain can occur during the day but are very brief (rather late in the day.)

The north of Vietnam

Compared to the rest of the country, the northern part of the country is experiencing colder winters. The temperatures can be colder (approximately 15°C) and often foggy, so the best time is definitely from April to October. To enjoy Halong Bay the fullest, the best seasons are the following: The first runs from April to June and the second from September to November. Please note that the months of July/August are very hot and humid and the months of December to March are cool.

The center of Vietnam

The best time to visit this region is between January and August. Please note that this part of the country experiences typhoons from September to November which may extend to December.

The south of Vietnam

The South benefits from a tropical climate, so it is warm all year long. However, the best time to visit is during the dry season.

For the seaside, try to avoid:

  • Danang (Hoi An): September, October, November
  • Nah Trang: October, November
  • Phu Quoc and Con Dao: from June to October

For the Northern rice paddy fields:

They become green in early June until the end of July (transplanting) and turn into yellow from august to the end of October (harvest). Most time of the year, those lands are fallow, so muddy between November and March (regenerated) and watered from April to May (filling.)

  • Green season – transplanting: from June to the end of July
  • Yellow season – harvest: from the beginning of August to the end of October
  • Brown season – regenerated: from the beginning of November to the end of March
  • Watered season – filling: from the beginning of April to the end of May

To sum up, there are 3 best periods to observe the beautiful rice paddy fields, from April to October. Please note that those seasons can change according to climate conditions.
